WPhone Not Entirely Deprecated (Yet)

Well as you may have noticed, the official WordPress.app isn’t as full featured as one might have hoped (no comment, plugin, etc. management). This means that WPhone still has some use so I encourage you to leave it installed for the time being, at least as backup.

However due to the other work, real life, and more recently the release of WordPress.app, our interest and motivation for working on WPhone has dwindled. This means I think it’s unlikely you’ll be seeing any other WPhone releases outside of maybe a maintenance release. There is currently no need for one, but if in the future WPhone breaks due to a new version of WordPress, I could see us doing a small update.

This possibility of small updates due to new wordpress versions is a hope to bloggers with other mobile devices (like myself). WPhone is the best solution for them at the moment. It’s a great plugin, nice and useful, and it would be a pity to lose this great tool in the future…

Hi. Please keep up your good work on this useful plugin! Here’s why: I upgraded my iPhone to the new 2.0 firmware and it sucked! It was so slow. I had to wait 10 seconds everytime I wanted to send a text. So I downgraded my phone back to 1.1.4. So Your plugin is awesome and much needed!

I don’t see why this plugin is deprecated just because there’s an IPhone app out there. I just installed your plugin to help me manage my blog from my blackberry. Its amazing! The interface is very clean and works like a charm.

This plugin has a much farther reaching user base than an IPhone only application. Keep up the good work. The rest of us non-IPhone users appreciate it.

Correct, WPhone still has it’s uses, but the primary purpose of the plugin was the iPhone.

The other part of the lack of updates is that Doug and Stephane have become busy (work, other projects, real life, etc.) and combine that with the fact it’s not needed anymore for the iPhone (which is the whole reason we wrote it in the first place), the time and motivation just isn’t there really anymore.

Yes, pls keep it up. This plugin is still my #1 choice when it comes to mobile blogging!

Hello! Please keep up your great work. People who do not have an iPhone have no other way to access WordPress from a mobile device. I have a Sony Ericsson P1i and wouldn’t know how to use WP without your WPhone.

Could you at least please do an update to fix the WP_PLUGIN_DIR issue? If using a custom plugin directory or wp-content directory, the plugin throws an error because it’s not finding it’s own files properly. (As discussed on wp-hackers).

Pretty please? With non-fat-whipped-topping and a cherry on top? PleasePleasePleeeeeaaaaaaassssssse? (I can keep going. Really! ;) )

Perhaps you could shift focus from the iPhone and realize that there are a BUNCH of us out here who use this religiously with other blogging platforms. My Nokia E90 is a FAR better blogging platform than the iPhone will ever be, and thanks to Wphone, I can completely manage my entire site without ever touching a computer.

I realize you guys are bummed because the iPhone has its own app now, but there’s a big market still for those of us who use other phones that desperately need something like Wphone!

I just installed this on my website (running 2.6), and it doesn’t seem to be working… so I guess it’s already been broken, since another commenter indicates that it doesn’t work for him either. I’m running Windows Mobile, and would *love* to use this.

  12. Eduardo November 26, 2008

I agree with the others. I just buy a nokia E71 and your plugin is the best for me - if not the only one that works with my phone. You see, few people are working to suit the needs of the other phones, far far way the huge majority of phone users. Ok, Iphone gives you visibility just because of the name. But WPhone (I would like to call your plugin “anyPhone”) gives you our fidelity, the mass majority fidelity. Think about. Tell Doug and Stephane of our movement - turn WPhone into anyPhone and keep it alive!
    Good luck and congratulations!

will this work with my htc fuze (same as the Touch Pro), which is currently one of the most advanced phone you can get. I am looking everywhere for a program that I can install on my phone so I can write my WordPress blog posts on my mobile. any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Don’t forget two issues:
    1. WPhone is a not well placed name
It is working perfectly on my BlackBerries
    2. Native Apps
Not every one wants to install an App for a Webapplication. Do I have to install anything on my PC to blog?

  16. Danny December 16, 2008

Android currently has no decent way for people to login into their Wordpress installs and make posts, besides this!

I’m really happy with what you helped me get accomplished, but I am still missing image upload support, if it had that, it would be PERFECT.

  17. John December 20, 2008

I wouldn’t stop working on wphone just because there’s an iPhone app. Not everyone has iPhones! There are more blackberries and other smart phones in use than iPhones. Stopping development on this excellent plugin would be ditching the rest of the user space.

I have just found out that WPhone does not work with IntenseDebate installed. I’m not sure which plugin is causing the problem. This is what I get when trying to view a post:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare is_mobile() (previously declared in [Path]/html/blog/wp-content/plugins/wphone/wphone.php:808) in [path]/html/blog/wp-content/plugins/intensedebate/intensedebate-comment-template.php on line 208

  19. Doug December 21, 2008

I contacted the ID folks about this — the newest version of their plugin should remove this error.

Also note that we have 1.5.1 in the dev branch but not in the trunk for WPhone — Viper or Steph may have to move this over.

I just started using WPhone on my Blackberry Curve 8330 and it’s awesome. Don’t get discouraged just because of the iPhone app, it’s not the majority of the smartphone market. There’s still tons of people out there with Palms, Windows Mobile, Blackberries, and Nokias that rely on your software.

Keep up the good work =D

Just another mobile user that does not use iPhone….
Mobile device existed long time before the iPhone, and I would really like to use my WM5/6 pdaphone to manage my 2.7 Wordpress blog.

    Please keep on!

    Regards,

    FD

Hey, just a quick note to say thanks for the WPhone plugin.

I am yet another person who is actively avoiding the iPhone and am genuinely thankful that there is another option that allows me to post to my WordPress from my Nokia 95. Whilst the iPhone is cool, it has a long way to go in terms of basic functionality.

I join the others in saying that the option of being able to upload images would be rad, but for the moment i am just really grateful that this WP plugin even exists. (Can you tell I have only discovered this in the last half hour?)

Keep up the fantastic work, and please keep in mind that not everyone in the world has an iPhone.

    Cheers

    Al

OK, so, because one phone has an official app you give up? Do you know there are plenty of other phones out there? Not everyone is caught up in the hype. It would be nice to have something out there that isn’t for the iphone. As a blackberry user I find this very useful.

  24. Tim Spaulding February 23, 2009

I also would like to add my support for continuing maintenance and development of WPhone. I use it on my Moto Q phone. It is the perfect tool for blogging on the run.

  25. Chris March 1, 2009

I just want to add one more comment echoing my support for this plugin. Like it’s been said not all of us have or even want an iphone. I use this plugin from my blackberry all the time and love it. Please, keep it going.

  26. Chris March 1, 2009

And one more thing, thanks for letting the iphone become the Wal-Mart of the internet…

  27. Dennis Bournique April 22, 2009

I’d like to add my plea for Wphone being at least minimally maintained.

Also, When I try to open a comment for editing, all I get is a page reading simply “Unknown action.” I’m using WP 2.7.1.

Anyone else seeing this or have a work around.
